There are all sorts of things to pique your interest in the Blyth Valley – fine examples of crinkle-crankle walls (unique to Suffolk), quirky village & pub signs, architectural wonders such as the Balancing Barn in Thorington and the metal dragon sculpture clinging to a chimneystack at Westhall. The Low House at Laxfield has no bar-counter, only an old-style tap room.
Then there’s the water clock at Wenhaston, more funky inventions by Tim Hunkin on Southwold Pier, medieval artefacts like that of the carved bressemer beam over Ancient House in Halesworth, a church nestling inside the ruins of another at Walberswick and a memorial cross at St Mary’s, Halesworth, fashioned from the propeller of a plane not to mention the painted ceiling at Huntingfield Church, remarkable not only for its beauty but how it came about.
